Kate Seddon completed the Graduate Diploma in Horticulture and Design at Burnley College (University of Melbourne), and subsequently established her landscape design business in early 2007. Kate has designed gardens for private homes throughout Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate, as well as planting schemes for primary schools, housing developments and low cost housing.
The site and aspect, the architecture and client preferences influence her design style, and her horticultural training ensures a keen focus on planting design, as well as the hard landscape elements. To quote a source of inspiration, the mid- 20th century American designer Thomas Church, “Gardens are for people” and this is a guiding principle. Also an important consideration is the use of plant material appropriate for the site, rather than working against the site conditions, which often requires significant additional input.
Working in conjunction with architects and builders, this ensures that the garden is a key element in the design process, rather than the last thing on the agenda.
Her gardens have appeared on ABC TVs Gardening Australia, in various magazines and newspapers, and this is the third time she has shown a garden at Garden Design Fest. Kate has been a guest speaker at Burnley College landscape design classes and presented a paper at the inaugural Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation Conference (2008).
